The 1.2-litre petrol motor in the 2019 Maruti WagonR will make the top-end variants of this hatchback more powerful than those of the Hyundai Santro.
For the first time since its launch in India, the Maruti Suzuki WagonR is going to be offered with a set of two different engine options when its third generation update makes its debut on the 23rd of January this year. Both these engines are going to be petrol units and different from each other in terms of their cubic capacity. While one is going to be a carry forward from the current iteration, which is a 1.0-litre unit, the other is going to be a 1.2-litre unit borrowed from the rest of the Maruti Suzuki’s fleet.
The 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder engine, is capable of churning out 67 BHP of power along with 90 Nm of peak torque. This engine will retail on the base as well as the mid spec trims of the 2019 WagonR. For transmission duties, it is going to use a 5-speed manual gearbox as standard. In addition to these, buyers of the mid-spec trim will get an option of a 5-speed AMT unit.

The 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder engine, is capable of producing 82 BHP of power along with a torque output of 113 Nm. This engine, will be available as a choice on the mid-spec trim while come as standard on the top-spec variants. Just as the 1.0-litre unit, the 1.2-litre unit in the 2019 Maruti WagonR is also going to get two transmission options (5-speed MT and 5-Speed AMT) to chose from.

When launched, the 2019 Maruti WagonR is going to compete against the Tata Tiago as well as the Hyundai Santro. Now the petrol derivative of the Tata Tiago comes as standard with a 1.2-litre engine which is capable of churning out 84 BHP of power along with 114 Nm of peak torque. The Hyundai Santro, on the other hand, comes as standard with a 1.1-litre, 4-cylinder engine which churns out 68 BHP of power along with 99 Nm of peak torque.

This means that the base and the mid-spec variants of the 2019 Maruti WagonR and the Hyundai Santro are at par with each other when it comes to the power and torque output figures of their respective engines. However, when we consider the top-spec variants of these vehicles, which are likely to cost quite close to each other, we see that the power and torque output figures of the WagonR, thanks to a bigger 1.2-litre engine, are considerably higher than those of the Hyundai Santro.
