Lamborghini Automobili launched the much awaited Urus yesterday. The world’s first Super Sports Utility Vehicle (SSUV) aims at creating a new segment of its own. Focusing on the all-road usability of the 2018 Lamborghini Urus. The SSUV features various modes and the company claims that the same vehicle can tame a racetrack, sand dunes, off-road trails and low traction surfaces like snow with ease and features individual modes for each. The global premiere of the Urus concept was presented five years ago at the Beijing Motor Show. The company devoted 18 months to build a separate production line for the SSUV. The same was done using virtual reality wherein computer simulated design of the entire production facility was built first, with finest of the detail in check and the necessary alterations were made before the work even started. Once the entire model was completed, the entire production line was built smoothly within 18 months.
2018 Lamborghini Urus Features
The LM002 successor shares its design with the company’s current theme following the company’s supercars Huracan and Aventador. The addition of two doors, headroom for the rear passengers and some trunk space has had its effect on the iconic Lamborghini lines. 2018 Lamborghini Urus Specifications
The 2018 Lamborghini Urus hosts a twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 that churns out 650 horsepower and allows the SSUV to sprint 100 kmph from a standstill in just 3.6 seconds. The company boasts a top speed of over 300 kmph. Lamborghini has always preferred normally aspirated v10 and V12 but the Urus features forced-induction because the car required a healthy torque of 850 Nm which is delivered at a comparatively low rpm of 2,240 rpm and stays until 4,500 rpm.
The engine is mated to an eight-speed gearbox which is electro-hydraulically controlled. The initial gears feature close-ratio to enhance low range performance and the higher gears feature wider-ratio for higher top speed. Additional support is provided by a torque-converter unit.
The 2018 Lamborghini Urus sprints to 200 kmph from a standstill in just 12.8 seconds. Braking comes from carbon-ceramic discs at both ends that measure 440mmx40mm at front and 370mmx30mm at the rear. These brakes help the Urus to stop from 100 kph in just 33.7 meters.
The four-wheel drive on the 2018 Lamborghini Urus features a Torsen self-locking differential, with torque split 40:60 to the independent front and rear axles, respectively. The front tyres can receive a maximum power of 70% while the rear can hold 87% depending on condition or driving mode. Wheels offered on the SSUV include 21″ to 23″ wheels with tyres developed by Pirelli specifically for the Urus.
The Urus features a rear-wheel steering system borrowed from the Aventador S. This allows the SSUV to steer the rear wheels by three degrees. At low speeds, the counter-phase steering helps the car in manoeuvring through tight spaces while the in-phase steering enhances grip in high speed turning.
2018 Lamborghini Urus Driving Modes
The 2018 Lamborghini Urus features up to six driving modes which will turn it into an off-road SUV to a track eating sportscar. These modes are selected via the “Tamburo” selector on the centre console. The four modes i.e. Strada for day to day use, Sport for a little-spirited driving, Corsa for proper track engagement and Neve for snow driving. The optional modes include a Terra mode for off-road use and Sabbia mode for dune bashing. Lastly, the Ego mode allows the user to adjust everything manually for a more customized experience.
These modes affect the engine, gearbox and steering response as well as alter the ride height from a minimum of 158 mm to a maximum of 248 mm.
2018 Lamborghini Urus Interior and Features
The interior of the 2018 Lamborghini Urus features design elements borrowed from its siblings, which, in fact, are limited and the SSUV features a revolutionary design theme. The dashboard features a Y-type design with the instruments and buttons inclined towards the driver. The hexagonal design elements in-sync with current models include air-vents, cup holders etc.
The three-spoke steering wheel features vibration damping following which is a customizable driver information TFT display. The dashboard adorns the latest offering of Lamborghini’s infotainment system. Both front passengers get 12-way power adjustable seats with an option of 18-way adjustable seats being extra. The boot holds 616-litre capacity and can be extended by folding down the rear seats.
2018 Lamborghini Urus Launch Price
Lamborghini plans to launch the Urus with a hybrid drivetrain as this SSUV is based on the Volkswagen’s MQB platform underpinning the current Bentley Bentayga, Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7, both of which are scheduled to receive a hybrid-powertrain. The 2018 Lamborghini Urus will go on sale in the international market this spring and is estimated for a base price of USD 2,00,000.
