In August 2016, following years of delay, the Iconic Jeep brand finally made its way to India. However, steep pricing for the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee means the brand isn’t accessible to most Indians. FCA has big plans for Jeep in India and playing a central role in those plans is the upcoming Jeep Compass. The upcoming Jeep C-SUV for India will be locally manufactured and will arrive in showrooms in Q3 2017. 2017 Jeep Compass price in India could be roughly Rs. 20-25 lakh. It made its first public appearance at the LA Auto Show in November 2016 and made its official India debut on April 12, 2017. Jeep’s upcoming SUV made its international debut in September 2016. It made its public debut at the LA Auto Show in November 2016. It is already on sale in the North American market. However, the new Jeep C-SUV India launch will take place in the third quarter of 2017. The upcoming SUV will enter production at FCA’s $280 million Ranjangaon plant in Maharashtra soon. It will make its India debut on April 12, 2017. Testing of the upcoming Jeep SUV is already underway in India. A handful of spy shots of the Jeep Compass test mules have surfaced online.
During their official launch event in August, FCA confirmed that there will be a made in India Jeep for our market that will go on sale in 2017. While the Jeep Renegade has been seen testing on multiple occasions in India, it will not be sold here. A new, small SUV based on the Renegade will come to India eventually.

Prices are likely to start at around Rs. 20 lakh for the base variants of the Jeep Compass in India. However, it is too early to make accurate guesses regarding the price of the Jeep C-SUV in India. The Compass retails for $20,995-$28,995 in the USA. So, an expected starting price of around Rs. 20 lakh will be a safe guess. Jeep is looking at heavy localisation for the Compass that will be made at their new facility in Maharashtra. Prices could come down to as much as Rs. 18 lakhs!
2017 Jeep Compass Rivals
In India, if priced in the Rs. 20-25 lakh bracket, the Jeep C-SUV will rival the likes of the Hyundai Tucson, and entry level variants of the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour.

India will get the new Compass with a 2.0 L Multijet diesel. This engine is likely to churn out around 170 bhp of max power and about 350 Nm of peak torque. Transmission options will include a 6-speed manual only. Jeep will manufacture this engine locally at the same facility. This will further help Jeep price the new Compass competitively. Also, Jeep will offer the Compass in India with a four wheel drive setup. A two wheel drive version will be available as well to keep the starting price low. Also on offer will be a petrol engine option. Compass Petrol will be powered by a 1.4 L unit that puts out 160 HP.
The 2017 Jeep Compass will be available internationally with as many as 17 different engine and transmission options. These will include both Diesel and Petrol motors. Some of these will come from the Renegade. Brazil will get the 2.0 Litre Tigershark Flex with a 6-speed Automatic Transmission. It will also get a 2.0 Litre Multijet II diesel with a 9-speed Automatic Transmission. The Diesel model will boast Jeep’s 4WD Active Drive Low system

2017 Jeep Compass India – Exterior Review
The 2017 Jeep Compass has a design inspired by current Jeep products like the Grand Cherokee and the earlier model Compass. The nose features Jeep’s trademark grille with sleek headlamps on either side. These headlamps house projector units and LED daytime running lights. The nose bears a strong resemblance to the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee models. Other highlights of the front end are a sculpted hood and chrome applique near the lower end of the bumper. The model seen in pictures here is the top of the line trim. It gets a dual tone paint job. There is also chrome lining around the window area that stretches all the way along the rear windshield.
In its side profile, the upcoming Jeep C-SUV features a rising window line, multiple alloy wheel designs based on the variant and Jeep’s trademark squared off wheel arches. At the back, the 2017 Jeep Compass gets split tail lamps with LED detailing. A very interesting design feature here is the chrome strip running along the upper edge of the window area flowing all the way along the rear windshield. The tail of the new Jeep SUV gets clear lens LED tail lamps. Overall, the design of the Jeep Compass ticks all the right boxes and should go down well with Indian car buyers.

Interiors of the Jeep Compass, like the exteriors, draw inspiration from current products. Jeep claims it has used premium materials for the cabin. Usage of gloss black, chrome along with some matte silver trim come together to offer a premium experience. The features list includes a UConnect touchscreen infotainment system, a TFT screen that can be configured to show instrument cluster, keyless entry, start-stop button and a 9 speaker audio system from Beats Audio. A video featuring spy shots of the interiors of the India-spec Jeep Compass has surfaced online. It reveals the dashhboard design of the upcoming Jeep SUV.

The India-spec Jeep Compass will receive a 2.0 L Multijet II Diesel engine. This engine will churn out a max power of around 170 bhp and a peak torque of 350 Nm. Transmission options will include a 6-speed manual only. A four-wheel drive system will be optional. There will also be petrol engine on offer. It will be 1.4 L Turbo petrol engine that puts out around 160 HP. The Compass will come with an all wheel drive setup along with Jeep’s Selec-Terrain system that adjusts the setting to suit multiple surface conditions. However, more details will be available soon.

And with no new Fiat products in the pipeline, FCA will be looking at the premium end of the market to stay afloat in India. While the Grand Cherokee and Wrangler have work well as an introduction to the brand in India, it is products like the Compass that will truly drive sales. Jeep India will follow the Compass launch with an all new small SUV based on the Renegade platform.
