The new look Hyundai Verna 2017 is finally here! The launch of the Verna took place at an official event in Delhi today. Prices start at roughly Rs 8 lakh. The new Verna is all-new, both inside and out. All this means that it will come across as a far more lucrative option to prospective car buyers than the last generation car. That said, it won’t be a cakewalk for the new Verna. It will have to lock horns with a rather formidable competitor in the form of the Maruti Ciaz. The Ciaz has been the undisputed king of upper-C segment in the last couple of years. Here, in this specs-sheet comparison, we decided to compare the new Verna and the Ciaz. So read on for new 2017 Hyundai Verna vs Maruti Ciaz price, specifications, mileage, features, etc. Also Read: New 2017 Hyundai Verna vs Honda City | New 2017 Hyundai Verna vs Old Model
It may be noted here that the last-generation Verna found many takers in India. The initial success of this car was owing to its almost radical looks, a long list of features, and frugal yet powerful engines. Now, the new 2017 model is likely to attract buyers with the same qualities. The new Verna not only enjoys a modern design, it also gets more features. Also, the engines, while coming from the outgoing car, are likely to have re-tuned in interest of additional power and mileage. All this should enable the new Hyundai Verna to offer stiff competition to the Ciaz.

2017 Hyundai Verna vs Maruti Ciaz Price

New 2017 Hyundai Verna | ₹ 8.00 lakh* | ₹ 12.61 lakh* |
Maruti Ciaz | ₹ 7.66 lakh | ₹ 11.44 lakh |

The introduction of GST has led to huge changes in the price of the Maruti Ciaz. While the petrol model has got marginally cheaper and now starts at Rs 7.66 lakh, prices of the Diesel models have seen a considerable rise. the top-end Ciaz Diesel now has a sticker price of Rs 11.44 lakh, which makes it costlier by more than Rs 1.6 lakh in some places. Hence, the huge price advantage the Ciaz Diesel once enjoyed has almost vanished due to GST. Read More – GST Impact on Maruti Ciaz
The new 2017 Hyundai Verna boasts all-new design and many new features. It also offers more space and higher comfort levels. All this comes at a slight premium. Prices of the new Verna 2017 model start at roughly Rs 8.00 lakh. The top-end Diesel model costs Rs 12.61 lakh. However, with the new generation of Hyundai’s popular sedan getting a sea of improvements, the higher prices should be well justified. That said, the Ciaz does hold a definite price advantage over the Verna.

2017 Hyundai Verna vs Maruti Ciaz Specifications
Specifications | New 2017 Hyundai Verna | Maruti Ciaz |
Engine | 1.6-litre petrol/1.6 litre diesel | 1.4-litre petrol/1.3-litre diesel |
Power | Petrol – 121BHP
Diesel – 126BHP |
Petrol – 91BHP
Diesel – 89BHP |
Torque | Petrol – 154 Nm
Diesel – 265 Nm |
Petrol – 130Nm
Diesel – 200Nm |
Transmission | 6-speed MT/6-Speed AT (both engines) | 5-speed MT/4-speed AT (petrol only) |
Now, this is one area where the Verna has a clear edge over the Ciaz. While the Ciaz is available with a 1.4-litre Petrol and a 1.3-litre Diesel engine, the new model 2017 Hyundai Verna offers 1.6-litre petrol and diesel engines. This means the new Verna will offer following engine options – 1.6-litre Petrol and 1.6-litre turbo Diesel. Also, only the Petrol model of the Ciaz offers an option of Automatic transmission. On the other hand, both 1.6-litre engines on the Verna offer a choice of either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission.
Hyundai has given the new Verna what it calls a Super Body Structure. In this, the company has used advanced high strength steel (AHSS) in the car’s construction. This helps in making the car’s structure more rigid, more crash worthy and lightweight, in addition to reducing the NVH levels of the car. The Ciaz’s structure utilises Suzuki’s TECT (Total Effective Control Technology) construction, utilising high tensile steel in its construction.
Finally, even in terms of power outputs, the Verna enjoys a clear lead over the Ciaz. True, the motors on the Maruti product here offer a higher mileage but it’s the Verna’s engines that offer the best mix of performance and fuel mileage. We have discussed the mileage of these two cars in the next section.
2017 Hyundai Verna vs Maruti Ciaz Mileage Comparison
Cars | Mileage (petrol) | Mileage (diesel) |
New 2017 Hyundai Verna | 15.92 – 17.70 KMPL | 21.02 – 24.75 KMPL |
Maruti Ciaz | 21 KMPL | 26 KMPL |
Talking solely in terms of mileage, there’s hardly any other car in the segment that’s as frugal as the Ciaz. The Ciaz, in both Petrol and Diesel formats, impresses with its fuel mileage. In comparison, the Verna has lower mileage figures for both the Petrol and Diesel engines, owing to their displacement of 1.6 litres. As the engines will come from the outgoing model, the new Verna Petrol will offer up to 17.70 KMPL, while its Diesel model will offer up to 24.75 KMPL. The Petrol Ciaz, on the other hand, easily returns up to 21 KMPL. The Diesel model of this car can return up to 26 KMPL! This makes the Ciaz a clear winner of our mileage comparison.
2017 Hyundai Verna vs Maruti Ciaz Dimensions Comparison
Dimensions | New 2017 Hyundai Verna | Maruti Ciaz |
Length (mm) | 4,385 | 4,490 |
Width (mm) | 1,729 | 1,730 |
Height (mm) | 1,450 | 1,485 |
Wheelbase (mm) | 2,580 | 2,650 |
While the new 2017 Verna is longer (+15 mm) and wider (+ 29 mm) than the outgoing model, this is another area where the Ciaz enjoys a clear lead over the upcoming Hyundai sedan. Even the wheelbase of the Verna is longer by 10 mm, which means the Korean sedan here is now more spacious. But it has to be the Ciaz which emerges out as a clear winner. If you compare the dimensions of these two models, the Ciaz is 105 mm longer and 1 mm wider. True, there’s only a marginal difference in the width, but a difference of 105 mm in the overall length clearly works in Ciaz’ favour. The new Verna offers a bootspace of 480-litres, which is 15-litres more than before. The Ciaz, with a bootspace of 510-litres, is still a winner.
2017 Hyundai Verna vs Maruti Ciaz Features
The Ciaz offers a long list of features. However, Hyundai has been known to launch every new car with segment-best features and the new 2017 Hyundai Verna should be no different in this aspect. While both the cars will be closely matched in many aspects, the Verna is sure to enjoy some additional features over the Ciaz. Both the cars have a touchscreen infotainment setup that supports Apple CarPlay. But the Verna’s unit should even offer support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay both. Also, the Verna offers ventilated seats. Maruti is yet to update the infotainment unit on Ciaz to support Android Auto.
One feature that remains conspicuous by its absence on the Ciaz is the power-operated driver’s seat. This feature alone makes the new Verna stand out. It’s also expected to get ventilated seats for additional cooling, a feature that’s also available on the Elantra. Both the cars offer keyless entry with go. Power windows, rear AC vents, multi-function steering wheel and rear defogger are also available on both the models. Both the cars will offer electrically-adjustable ORVMs and tilt steering.
2017 Hyundai Verna vs Maruti Ciaz Safety Features
Both the cars offer ABS with EBD and front dual airbags. However, the top-end Verna is likely to offer a full quota of 6 airbags. Also, top-end models of both the cars offer rear parking sensors with camera. Also, the top-spec trims of both the models offer Day/Night Rear View camera, ISOFIX child seat mounts and seatbelt pre-tensioners with force limiters. The top-end Verna, however, has 6 airbags. Another area where the Verna has a clear advantage over the Ciaz is in braking. Don’t get us wrong here, for we don’t doubt the Ciaz’ braking capabilities by even a whisker. However, the Verna will get disc brakes at all all four wheels, thereby offering stronger braking force. The new Verna will also offer speed-sensing door lock.
2017 Hyundai Verna vs Maruti Ciaz – Exterior Design Comparison
We have already spoken in great detail about the way the new 2017 Hyundai Verna looks. Hence, we have kept the description pretty short over here. The new model Verna is an all-new car. This means it gets a new design, inside and out. The design of the new Verna builds upon the Fluidic Scupture 2.0 design language. All this means that the new Verna looks sportier, more modern and a bit more radical than most other cars in its segment. To us, the new car looks really sweet and we are sure it’ll be one of the most attractive sedans once it’s launched here.
The Maruti Ciaz has been around for a few years now. Yet, we really have no complaints with the way this car looks. True, it’s nowhere as flamboyant as the new Verna, but the Ciaz is for those who prefer understated elegance over loud and radical designs. The Ciaz looks sophisticated and thanks to its large dimensions, it looks as big as cars from half a segment above. While a facelift seems to be in the pipeline, the Ciaz comes with a cool new Blue paint option. The Ciaz isn’t boring, no, not at all. Bits like pulled-back headlamps, wrapround taillamps, bold creases and clamshell hood go a long way to ensure the car looks modern without being as loud as the new Verna.
Between the two, it’s really a personal choice. The Ciaz can be compared to a skilled businessman who is clever yet relaxed. The new Verna, on the other hand, is like a successful young kick-boxer who’s ready to tell the world about his arrival.
New 2017 Hyundai Verna vs Maruti Ciaz – Interior Design Comparison
The interior of both these cars are reflections of their respective exteriors. The new Verna’s interior looks all modern and sophisticated. The Ciaz, on the other hand, has a relaxing cabin that’s modern without needing to be on the louder side. As the 2017 Verna is an all-new product, its dashboard looks far more radical and modern than that of the outgoing model. Taking centrestage on the dashboard of the new 2017 Verna is a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system that is flanked by two trapezoidal aircon vents on either side. The steering is also all-new and seems to be of just the right thickness. While the cabin is predominantly black, the seats get beige upholstery to give the cabin a dual-tone colour.
Even the interior of the Ciaz has a dual-tone colour treatment. The car’s dashboard gets a dual-tone treatment. There’s some faux wood to lend a touch of premium-ness. The centre console here is dominated by the SmartPlay infotainment system that supports Apple CarPlay. Overall, the Ciaz cabin is a comfortable and a relaxing place to be in, but it surely lacks the sporty appeal of the new 2017 Verna’s cabin.
New 2017 Hyundai Verna vs Maruti Ciaz – Conclusion
Price – The new Hyundai Verna 2017 model is costlier. However, the increase in price will be justifiable through a more modern design, more features and updated engines. The Ciaz, even after the price rise owing to GST, enjoys a pricing advantage over the new Verna.
Specifications – This is where the Verna is a clear winner. The new model will one diesel and one petrol engine to choose from, each displacing 1.6 litres. There’s an automatic transmission for both engines. In comparison, the Ciaz is available with only a petrol and a diesel engine option. Also, there’s no automatic for the diesel engine. Finally, the Verna’s engines offer more grunt than those of the Ciaz, thereby making the new Hyundai sedan a stronger performer.
Mileage – Ciaz has the clear upper hand here. Both the petrol and the diesel engines of the new Verna are nowhere as fuel-efficient as the engines of the Ciaz. Also, thanks to the SHVS technology on the Ciaz diesel, it becomes of the most frugal cars around. Even the petrol model of the Ciaz has a higher mileage than petrol model of the Verna.
Dimensions – This is yet another area where the Ciaz stands out as a clear winner. The Ciaz offers more headroom and legroom than the Verna. It’s also marginally wider. The Ciaz should be your choice if you need maximum interior space.
Features – While both the Ciaz and the Verna offer a long list of features, it’s the new Korean model here that offers some extra bells and whistles. Same applies to the safety features on offer.
Design – It’s a matter of personal choice, really. While the Ciaz has a lot of understated elegance going for it, the Verna is on the louder side and is very flamboyant. The same can be said about the interior of the two cars. The Ciaz can be compared to a skilled businessman who is clever yet relaxed. The new Verna, on the other hand, is like a successful young kick-boxer who’s ready to tell the world about his arrival.
