The largest and most powerful street bike from KTM, the 2014 KTM 1290 Super Duke R is here! And it is the beast that everyone expected it to be after KTM showed the 1290 Duke R Prototype in 2012.
The bike looks crazy (not as edgy as the prototype, but it is a production bike i.e. sacrifices had to be done), the styling is typical KTM with lots of muscle added for effect, the performance figures are even more crazy. We wonder how it would feel riding the bike!
What’s New?
You’d instantly recognise the 1290 as a KTM, the exposed trallis frame, the edgy styling, the sporty riding position are hallmarks of KTM design. People who were expecting an exact replica of the 1290 prototype might be a bit disappointed, but it still looks awesome. Have a look at the photos of the bike below:
The bike stays true to the prototype, but things have been added which make it street legal and those take some of the magic away. You get proper seats, footpegs, handlebar rear-view mirrors, number plate holders at the front and rear, lights and a conventional exhaust.
The talking point of the bike is its engine, it borrows the engine from the KTM RC8 superbike which has been fettled with to increase the total cubic capacity. The earlier 1195cc V-twin engine is now 1301 cc, and the performace figures match the large dimension of the engine. It produces 180 BHP of power @ 8870 rpm and a peak torque of 144 Nm of torque (173 BHP @10000 rpm and 120 Nm @ 8000 rpm for the RC8). The bike employs throttle-by-wire system, KTM says this non-intrusive system provides smooth engine acceleration without any performance issues. The engine is mated to a six-speed transmission with a slipper-clutch, this combination (KTM claims) helps the bike to accelerate from 0-200 KMPH in 7.2 seconds! We are wondering what the 0-100 KMPH figure would be.
An electronic driving aid package is provided, which offers four different driving modes (rain, street, sport and plus), traction control settings and ABS settings. As susal, the ABS system on the bike can be switched off completely, there is also a Supermoto mode which allows the ABS to work only on the front wheels and allows the rear wheels to slide.
There are some deatils about the bike which will be revealed shortly, keep watching this space for more.

KTM will unleash a new top end naked street fighter bike in its lineup very soon, the 2014 KTM 1290 Super Duke R. The 1290 Super Duke R will combine the savage power of the 1195 cc engine powering the KTM 1190 RC8 superbike with and a host of performance oriented features, a perfect bike for hooning. Combine the performance with the crazy edgy KTM naked streetfighter styling, you get the perfect show-off machine on two wheels!
While we may be excited about the bike’s launch, we are saddened by the fact that KTM(and partner Bajaj) are not actively considering launching the bike in India anytime soon.
What’s new?
KTM has not released any info on the bike apart from the teaser image shown above and the teaser video posted below. What we do know comes from the 2012 EICMA held at Milan, where KTM showcased the 1290 Super Duke R Prototype. The prototype was a wild bike where KTM designers and engineers went all out and created a monster. The production variant, the company promised, would mirror the prototype in many ways though there are some crazy details which would obviously be toned down. The silhouette of the bike does look the same as the prototype though, we’ll have to wait and see.
Like all KTMs the 1290 Super Duke R will be a very angular bike visually, with a wide muscular tank and sharp rear section. The handlebars are placed very low, forcing the rider into a very sporty riding posture. The components on the bike are designed to handle the huge stresses involved with high speeds and quick direction changes.
The 2014 KTM 1290 Super Duke R’s heart will be a 1195cc, V-twin engine that powers the RC8 Superbike too. In the RC8 the engine makes 173 BHP of power and 120 Nm of torque. Reports suggest that the 1290 Duke could get a more powerful version of the engine, one making close to 200 BHP of power! The bike will feature ride-by-wire technology, an alloy tubular frame, brakes made in collaboration with Brembo, light alloy wheels, new inverted shocks and a specialised exhaust system among others.

Though we may or may not (and the probability is tilting towards the latter) get the 1290 Super Duke in India, it will be a bike that’ll showcase KTMs prowess in bike making and will be used to attract more customers in India towards the brand. We are pretty excited about the bike and will bring you the latest news on it as it reaches us, do keep following this space for more on the 2014 KTM 1290 Super Duke R.
