This interesting post compares all versions of the iconic Maruti Swift that have been on sale in India since 2005. We know that Swift is a legendary nameplate in our market. It is close to 20 years in its lifecycle. Still, the demand is at an all-time high. It is among the highest-selling vehicles in India ever. Recently, the largest carmaker in the country launched the fourth generation avatar of the Swift. This gives us an excuse to compare the specifications and prices of all the iterations that have been on sale in our market starting from 2005. Let us dive into it.
Maruti Swift – First Generation (2005)
The journey commences in 2005. The Swift was just launched in India for the first time. Little did anyone know that this was going to change the Indian automobile industry forever. At the time, there was either a 1.3-litre G13B petrol engine which produced a decent 88 hp and 111 Nm, or a 1.3-litre Multijet diesel engine (introduced in 2007) which was good for 75 hp and 190 Nm of peak power and torque. At the time, the sole transmission option was a 5-speed manual gearbox. The first generation Swift used to retail between Rs 3.87 lakh to Rs 4.85 lakh, ex-showroom.
Note that there was a facelift version of this first-gen model in 2010. Interestingly, it was not just a regular facelift but a comprehensive one since a new petrol engine was introduced. Therefore, you would remember this Swift getting the 1.2-litre K12B petrol mill which churned out 85 hp and 113 Nm of peak power and torque. The diesel engine remained unchanged and so did the 5-speed manual transmission.

Maruti Swift – Second Generation (2011)
Then we move on to the second-generation Maruti Swift which came into existence in 2011. This time around, there were aesthetic changes, interior updates, as well as an upgraded engine in the petrol version. Now, the Swift came with a 1.2-litre K12C petrol engine which generated a decent 87 hp and 113 Nm and a 1.3-litre Multijet diesel engine which was carried over from the last-gen model and produced an identical 75 hp and 190 Nm peak power and torque. The owners had to be content with a sole 5-speed manual transmission. It was priced between Rs 4.22 lakh and Rs 6.38 lakh, ex-showroom.
The facelift to this avatar arrived in 2014. Again, there were exterior modifications and tweaks to the petrol engine. This time around, the 1.2-litre K12C petrol mill belted out slightly lower 84 hp and 115 Nm of peak power and torque. The diesel engine and the single transmission continued but the prices of the top trim went up a little to Rs 6.95 lakh, ex-showroom.

Maruti Swift – Third Generation (2018)
Then we move on to 2018 when the Maruti Swift received its third generation version. This is when the AMT gearbox was introduced while the powertrains remained the same. During this time, the trend of automatic transmissions was catching up. People wanted the convenience of not having to work the gearbox manually. Therefore, the same 1.2-litre K12C petrol engine and 1.3-litre Multijet diesel engine continued with 83 hp / 113 Nm and 75 Nm / 190 Nm of peak power and torque, respectively. The prices ranged from Rs 4.99 lakh to Rs 8.29 lakh, ex-showroom.
After this time period, things changed for good at Maruti Suzuki when it announced that it would no longer offer any diesel engine in its entire portfolio. Hence, the facelift version of the third generation Swift came into existence in 2021 with a sole 1.2-litre K12M petrol engine with a mild hybrid technology. This time, it produced a respectable 90 hp and 113 Nm of peak power and torque. The transmission options remained the same. The prices went up further with the Swift now starting at Rs 5.74 lakh and going all the way up to Rs 8.41 lakh, ex-showroom.

Finally, we come to the present where the Maruti Swift comes with an all-new 1.2-litre 3-cylinder Z12E mild hybrid engine which makes 82 PS and 112 Nm of peak power and torque. Note that this is the first time it is using a 3-cylinder engine. The transmission duties are carried out by either a 5-speed manual or an AMT gearbox.
