Container Carrying 40 Jitendra EV electric scooter catches fire in Nashik
This incident took place inside a transport truck carrying 40 scooters from Jitendra EV. 20 vehicles in the upper section of the container were burnt down to ashes in this incident. A statement from the company read:”An unfortunate incident took place on 9th April near our factory gate in a scooter transport container.” This is the fifth such incident from last month and third this month. The mishap also adds fuel to the debate on the safety of electric vehicles in a hot country like ours.
Late last month, an Ola Electric S1 Pro was burnt to ashes in Pune. Unfortunately, a man and his daughter breathed their last as their Okinawa scooter caught fire in Chennai the very day the incident with Ola e-scooter took place. Also, in December last year, a senior citizen lost his life as a fire broke out in the cargo scooter being charged in his premises. Such incidents have made many question the safety offered by these vehicles during the summer season.
Speaking to ET Auto, a spokesperson for the company said,”An unfortunate incident took place on 9th April near our factory gate in a scooter transport container. The situation was immediately brought under control by timely intervention from our team. Safety being of prime importance, we are investigating the root cause and we will come up with the findings in the coming days.” Meanwhile, the Road Transport Ministry has asked the Centre for Fire Explosive and Environment Safety (CFEES) to investigate the cause of the fires and submit a report by the end of this month.

“EVs are at an early stage of adoption, such incidents have the potential to harm the overall perception of EVs from a safety standpoint. It’s a major concern and must be addressed by the concerned authorities,” said Suraj Ghosh, associate director, powertrain and compliance forecasts, IHS Markit. “Also, besides parity in price, range and affordability with ICE, there must be parity of ‘ease of use’ too for EVs for faster mass adoption.”
